MyPaper Headline – NUS Couple Finds Goldmine in Affiliate Marketing

July 17, 2007

Lolz.. Yup that is really the headline in today’s MyPaper issue (or what I gather from my desperate translation of the Chinese paper).. And the NUS couple who is reported to have supposedly found a goldmine in affiliate marketing is yours truly and Patricia Lin (the other half of the couple obviously).

MyPaper - Affiliate Marketing

Firstly, a big thanks to Yiting! The ultra nice and friendly journalist who chanced upon our blog amongst the million blogs out there and decided to do an interview on us. Perhaps Patricia was too stunning (or perhaps it was me? I’m just teasing…)

She’s a MyPaper journalist and was doing her research on affiliate marketing. Really enjoyed the interview and also photo shoot. Was really worried that my hair would turn out to be cartoon-ish as people commented that my hair resembles the esplanade (or durain) earlier in the day. (yes, i admit I’m vain).

The funiest thing was when I received quite a few smses from my friend, the first question I asked them was ‘How was my hair in the photo?’.

Just in case if you’re wondering if our chinese is really that powerful, the interview was actually conducted in 100% English. The only time we conversed in Chinese was when Yiting wanted my Chinese name. And we took like 3 mins before she could get it right.

I also had an equally hard time trying to read the article out loud to my mother. Lolz.. Who was really amused but yet saddened by the recent unfortunate events that has happened in my family. But shall share more on that some other day.

For now, let’s talk more about that article!

The purpose of the article was to investigate the rising trend of affiliate marketers in Singapore, especially the youth.

Hence, having been an affiliate marketer for close to a year and having invested in a ton of affiliate marketing materials which includes Ewen Chia’s Secret Affiliate Weapon, Rosalind Gardner’s Super Affiliate Handbook and also Jason Kwan’s Affiliate Formula Exposed (which in my opinion is the best affiliate marketing guide around), I certainly had much to share about affiliate marketing.

Now of course, in that article, affiliate marketing was basically portrayed as simply promoting other people’s products for a cut of the profits in the form of commissions. And the main form of promotion mentioned was using blogs.

But seasoned affiliate marketers would know that it really ain’t so simple. Just by having a blog and pasting some banners or doing some reviews simply ain’t going to earn you much profits. Unless you receive millions of unique visitors.

There were many advanced strategies like list building, creating squeeze pages, market research, branding etc that I would have love to share. But obviously, I did not want to overwhelm Yiting with them. Likewise, complete beginners would have no clue what I’m talking about.

So the main purpose of that article was really to build awareness for affiliate marketing and internet marketing in general. As we truly feel that it is a useful vehicle for anyone who dreams of attaining freedom (both financial and time)

For the past 2 and a half months, Patricia, Munir (my biz partner) and I have been working at least 12 hours every single day on our latest social networking site, Kanggie. It will be up in prolly around 2 weeks time and that is the vehicle that I promise I will hold no limits in sharing everything you need to know.

Copywriting, list building, traffic generation, SEO, HTML, market research, blogging, graphics design, affiliate marketing, product creation and everything else about internet marketing. We have left no ground uncovered. And it’s filled with over 100 step by step video learning tutorials.

But it’s really not only about learning the neccessary knowledge. It’s a place where you gather and make friends, gain exposure for yourself and business, get the latest bargains and products and have fun.

Most importantly, it has a lifetime commissions afiliate program. So for every friend you refer to join, you stand to earn a lifetime commission on every single cent he/she spends on our site.

We’ll be closing the doors for beta teasters and JV partners in a few days time. So be sure to hop in now if you haven’t!

Kanggie

And lastly, be sure to read the e-Version of MyPaper! (provided your Chinese is good)

Shall end off with this conversation I had with Patricia:

Me: Are our website links being mentioned inside the article??

Patricia: Nope…

Me: Manz.. What a waste lahz!

Patricia: C’mon… This is just the first of many more articles to come featuring us

Me: You bet!

Both giggles in laughter..

yep dear!!! Many more articles on us in the near future! I can see it and feel it! But I’m glad that the article is published just before Kanggie launches because then people who know about affiliate marketing will have access to all the information that they will need all at one stop! How i wish we are them and able to cut short the learning curve with a website such as Kanggie! :D

Found your story on mypaper sharing of affiliate marketing and how both of you making money part time . just too bad the news paper did not provide the url link to your site . was woundering how much it cost, for them to print your story at the news paper .

    Hi johnxia

The journalist came across our blogs and did a cover on us. It was certainly a great opportunity that was offered to us and we totally cherish it. Perhaps it was a chance provided to us as we are YOUNG and VIBRANT youths who are perhaps starting a new trend among uni students and well, we definitely feel proud of being featured by our local newspaper!

    Cheers,
    Patricia

  4. Calvin on July 17th, 2007 7:33 pm

Erm.. it did not cost us a single cent.. The journalist seeked us out.. Honestly, I think u got the wrong idea as this is not meant to be advertising for us. We did not approach any newspaper to advertise for us.

That article was meant to a report on the rising trend of affiliate marketers among Singaporeans.

Anyway, as long as you offer a true value and have a genuine and unique story to share and not just out to gain some exposure for your own gains, you can try to do an offline press release.

And it doesn’t matter even if it did not have our website links. We’re glad that we are able to offer something beneficial and provide an opinion to people who are totally new to the idea of internet marketing.

    Wow congrats Calvin! :)
The article was well-written and more people are exposed to affiliate marketing now. Of cos i will have to agree with you that it is not an easy road. Lots of effort and determination. I hope you get more interviews in the future! I hope one day i have the chance to be interviewed too hee hee :D
    Keep up the good work!

  9. Alex Yeo on July 18th, 2007 4:30 pm

    Ohhh,

Both of you are featured. Congrats!
Maybe the next will be StraitsTimes and there will be your URL links, just like Ewen Chia! :D

  10. Calvin on July 18th, 2007 8:41 pm

    Hi Kaiwei,

thanks! hee the increased exposure will certainly be good. But just glad that our voice was being heard. Rather than the usual giving of tuition or sales promoter job (both of which I was involved in my first year of studies), students can actually use internet marketing to generate some extra allowance. Since we’re online so often anyway.

And honestly, this can be an alternative stream of income for everyone in general. Be it if you’re just looking for that extra few hundred dollars a mth to pay some bills or hope to attain financial freedom, internet marketing serves as an extremely useful vehicle to achieve those goals. :)

  11. Calvin on July 18th, 2007 8:52 pm

    Hi Connie,

glad you enjoyed the article! :)

Yupz we certainly look forward to having more interviews.

And I’m sure everyone else have an equal chance of being featured. Just have to keep visualizing and believing in yourself.

The funny thing is, we honestly visualized this happening and it became a reality for us.

The next headline that we’re visualizing is – ‘NUS Couple Achieves Their First Million When They’re Still Studying’.

Whether or not that becomes a reality, it doesn’t matter. Just keep visualizing and believing in yourself! :)

  12. Calvin on July 18th, 2007 8:58 pm

    Hi Alex,

hee yeah Straits Times sounds good. And also every other newspaper and magazines available. :)

Nonetheless, we are honestly not too carried away by that article. It was a nice feeling definitely. But what matters most is we always remember our purpose and live a purpose-driven life. :)

  13. -:-queen_pat-:- on July 18th, 2007 10:46 pm

I agree with you dear.. we need to always constantly remind ourselves about our intentions for what we are doing and not lose focus (look who’s talking here!). lol! I’m certainly glad that we are being noticed for our efforts and I’m looking forward to our Kanggie launch which will definitely help and share with people much more knowledge and information related to Internet Marketing! :D

  14. Donald on July 19th, 2007 7:16 pm

    thanks alot! :)

  16. Kang on July 22nd, 2007 3:12 am

Congratulations on making the headlines :)

I’m from NUS too! Maybe we should meet up for coffee some time.

Heard about Kanggie already at WIS, and have been amused at the likeliness between that and my name, lol.

  17. Jimmy Lim on July 22nd, 2007 12:33 pm

    Good Day,

Can I ask you a question?

I have a hard time searching for a suitable web hosting, I currently a student so cannot afford to choose a “wrong” web host company as there is a minimum subscription period of one year.

Is is possible to register a domain name first and then redirect the domain name to a free blog at blogger?

Then focus on creating unique quality content and promoting that URL/domain name first.

After got some traffic and/or have decided on a web host company then transfer the contents and the particular domain name to the chosen web host server?

    Regards,
    Jimmy

  18. Calvin on July 22nd, 2007 4:55 pm

    Hi Kang,

Lolz.. Yup I know you’re from NUS too as we heard Dylan mention about you at WIS but din get the chance to meet up with you there.

I’m sure we’ll get more chances to meet in school :)

Anw, yupz it’s true about the similarity of your name and Kanggie. Lolz.. Perhaps you should be our mascot? (just teasing)

So all the more u should promote it eh? *hint hint*

School’s starting soon so enjoy ur hols manz!

  19. Calvin on July 22nd, 2007 5:06 pm

    Hi Jimmy,

I understand your constrains as I’m a student too..

Anyway, just give you some honest feedback.

It’s true when you first start out, you might be kinda reluctant to fork out a single cent. But honestly, that’s one of the biggest mistakes one can commit.

When I first started out, I also faced the same dilemma. I did not want to get a hosting account and autoresponder. As expected, I wasn’t really very serious about my online ventures since I wasn’t spending a single cent on it.

However, the moment I decided to sign up my own hosting account and autoresponder and other services, not only did it allow me to maximize my marketing efforts, my mindset also changed for the better.

Why is that so? Bcos now that I know there are costs incurred, I simply had to put in extra effort to make sure those costs weren’t wasted. And that extra motivation force made a huge huge difference.

Think about it, a web host costs only $9.97 monthly which equates to only around S$15. If you are unwilling to even fork out such a small amount every month, then something must be wrong with your approach.

You really got to treat it like a business and you know how little that $15 is compared to any single oflfine business.

You may not believe this but I had to scrimp and save initially just to afford my webhosting, autoresponder and other services.

But I believe most people don’t have to go through that extent. :)

As for recommendations, I understand you stated that there’s a minimum subscription period. I personally use Hostgator and there’s no minimum subscription for that. So you might want to check it out.

    Hope it helps! :)

  20. Review of Nuffnang On Sunday Times at The Insights Of Calvin Woon on July 22nd, 2007 6:18 pm

[...] Nuffnang is on Sunday Times! Recently, online making opportunities seem to have attracted quite a bit of attention in the Singapore’s offline print media. Earlier on, Email Cash Pro was featured on Sunday Times (Singapore’s most popular English Daily) . Ewen Chia followed suit and later was also featured in a Chinese newspaper.  And just earlier this week, a journalist for My Paper wanted to find out more about affiliate marketing and that’s how Patricia and I ended up being on the headlines. Read it here. [...]

  21. Jimmy on July 24th, 2007 1:15 pm

    Thanks for your reply.

I think I allow myself one week to find a suitable web host for less than SGD$10 per month(mostly likely got 1 year subscription).

If unable to find(the cheap web host sompanies got too many negative reviews from forums), then I use the link to sign up for hostgator.

  22. Kayceezharold on July 24th, 2007 10:56 pm

Way to go, my fave couple! Glad to read the Affiliate Marketing news article where you were featured. Its a great opportunity for greater things to come!

I can tell that you both, (and Munir also of course) are destined for greater stuffs!

Most important thing to remember, as you’ve already mentioned, is to continue providing value to whoever that comes into contact with you. Can be just a word of encouragement, or a little nudge in the right direction – for which KANGGIE has been designed.

Whatever it is, as long as you are sincere, and provide value, everything else will fall into place… and of course applying the Law of Attraction helps as well… ;-)

Wishes for Blue Skies always for your IM-ventures!

    Kayceez

[...] And this week’s topic is on blogging. And the reason why she’s appearing on it has got to do with our recent feature on MyPaper for the rising trend of affiliate marketing (you can read it here). And thus the editor referred us to come onto the show. At least that was her original intention. UNTIL… the producer decided that the two of us represented sort of the same group and wanted just one of us. [...]
